This week we had the opportunity to connect with the team from The LGBT Center of Greater Reading, as part of our ongoing .gay Community Spotlight interview series!

Learn more about their work here and read our chat below.

How would you describe your organization’s mission?

The LGBT Center of Greater Reading creates, administers, and provides services, advocacy, and support to the Greater Reading LGBTQ+ community, including our allies, with the goal that all may live a life of fulfillment, inclusion, and celebration.

Tell us about how that mission is brought to life through your work?

We currently provide support services that include counseling, support groups, crisis intervention, food & toiletry pantry, life-skills training, professional development, consultation and diversity auditing, warm meals, drop-in center hours, free wifi, workforce development and a library onsite.

What would happen if your organization suddenly did not exist?

We serve more than 15k people per year. If the organization died suddenly, there would be a tremendous void in the community.

What can people do to get involved and help make sure that never happens?

People can donate, inquire whether their workplace has matching funds, volunteer, apply for a position, stand with us in advocacy and speak out against bigotry, hatred and discrimination.

Why does LGBTQ+ visibility matter to you?

Our community has been fighting for basic human rights forever. Visibility is so important on that journey. It brings an awareness with it that we are everywhere and just like everyone else. We are your teachers, doctors, plumbers, laborers, police officers and more.

In your own words, what does “LGBTQ+ safety and support” mean specifically?

LGBTQ+ safety and support mean being able to be your authentic self, surrounded by those that support you and your journey. Living your truth without negative reaction.

Who are some of your LGBTQ+ heroes?

Harvey Milk, Marsha P. Johnson, Bayard Rustin, Sen. Tammy Baldwin, Martina Navratilova, Sally Ride, Audre Lorde

If you could give LGBTQ+ youth one message, what would it be?

One message would be: Stay true to yourself. Stand tall and know that you matter and that there are people out there just like you and we're here to support you. You are loved.

Tell us about a time when you felt like the work you do at your organization really mattered or made a difference for the communities you serve?

I am extremely grateful to do the work I do every single day, because, every day I see the look in the eyes of those we are serving. We are making a difference one person at a time. Love always wins and we do everything from a place of love and support.
