How would you describe your organization's mission?
LYG's mission is to create a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ youth in the Louisville area. We are dedicated to empowering these young individuals, fostering self-acceptance, personal growth, and community engagement. Our goal is to provide the resources, support, and opportunities necessary for LGBTQIA+ youth to thrive and embrace their authentic selves.
Tell us about how that mission is brought to life through your work.
Our mission is brought to life through a range of programs, resources, and events that LYG offers. We provide support groups, counseling services, educational workshops, and social activities that create a sense of belonging and build resilience among LGBTQIA+ youth. Additionally, we collaborate with local organizations, schools, and community leaders to advocate for LGBTQIA+ inclusion and raise awareness about the unique needs of these young individuals.
What would happen if your organization suddenly did not exist?
If LYG suddenly did not exist, LGBTQIA+ youth in the Louisville area would lose a vital support system and safe space. The absence of our organization would leave a significant gap in resources, mentorship, and community connection for these young individuals. They would face increased challenges in finding acceptance, accessing specialized services, and building the confidence to live authentically.
What can people do to get involved and help make sure that never happens?
To ensure the continued impact of LYG, people can get involved by volunteering their time, donating funds or resources, or becoming a mentor to LGBTQIA+ youth. By spreading awareness about our organization, participating in our events, and advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusivity, individuals can help create a supportive environment that allows LYG to thrive and serve its mission.
Why does LGBTQ+ visibility matter to you?
LGBTQIA+ visibility is essential because it validates the existence and experiences of individuals within this community. Visibility challenges stereotypes, promotes acceptance, and provides role models for LGBTQIA+ youth who may be struggling with their identities. By celebrating visibility, we strive to create a society where LGBTQIA+ individuals can live authentically without fear of discrimination or rejection.
In your own words, what does "LGBTQ+ safety and support" mean specifically?
LGBTQIA+ safety and support means creating an environment where individuals can be their true selves without fear of harm or prejudice. It involves fostering an inclusive community that respects and embraces diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. It also entails providing access to resources, mental health services, and legal protections that ensure the physical and emotional well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Who are some of your LGBTQ+ heroes?
Our LGBTQIA+ heroes are the individuals who have paved the way for progress, acceptance, and equality. They include activists such as Marsha P. Johnson and Harvey Milk, who fought tirelessly for LGBTQIA+ rights. We also draw inspiration from contemporary leaders like Laverne Cox, Janet Mock, and Dan Levy, who use their platforms to elevate LGBTQIA+ voices and advocate for positive change.
If you could give LGBTQ+ youth one message, what would it be?
To all LGBTQIA+ youth, we want you to know that you are valid, loved, and deserving of respect. Your journey is unique, and you have a powerful voice and the strength to overcome any obstacles. Reach out, seek support, and remember that you are an important part of a diverse and vibrant community, and LYG is here to welcome you, affirm you and protect you.
Tell us about a time when you felt like the work you do at your organization really mattered or made a difference for the communities you serve.
Speaking for myself, one powerful instance that highlighted the impact of our work at LYG was lifting trans youth up during a youth-led rally in opposition of bills banning trans healthcare. LYG was there to support the event with logistical support, including water and first-aid, but most importantly we managed the stage area to enable the youth to be the prominent voices at the rally. That's the great thing about LYG! We are a youth-directed organization that exists to lift up young voices. LYG is there to a network that lifts LGBTQIA+ youth can meet their adult bullies head-on and lead their peers as shining beacons of hope and empowerment.
