.gay Music Monday Feature: An Interview with Buddy

Hi, .gay!

We are kicking off our #DotGayMusicMonday blog series with Rising Latino artist Buddy.

The young musician from Los Angeles has been making waves in the music industry with his latest single, "Only Request," which is out now.

The Colombian American entertainer draws inspiration from R&B, pop, rap, and Latin music. He is sharing his experience and telling his story through Latino R&B Pop energy representing diversity, authenticity, and sexy vibes.

We chatted with him about what inspires him and why LGBTQ+ representation in music matters.

What inspired you to start playing and making music?

I have been inspired by music since I can remember. I grew up singing in the church and karaoke with my grandpa every weekend. My grandpa was my biggest music inspiration. I would be in awe of his voice and the power he had and the way it made me feel. Up until age 18, I was a singing/dancing powerhouse teenager. Life took a shift, and I stopped singing. I did what I thought was right: I went to college and got a good job in the medical field because that's the "You're successful" image I was trying to obtain. It felt safe and assuring. I wanted to impress people. But I was so miserable every single day. I thought, “This is not why I'm here.”

I would sing in the clinic every day and my coworkers would tell me, "Why are you working here?" Long story short, I went through a tough separation, lost my job, and hit my absolute lowest, only to build myself from the ground back up.

I went into complete Artist and self-love mode. Putting myself first, my growth, my transformation, and doing what makes me happy and what I'm good at. So I found an incredible producer, Trent Park. We worked so well together and clicked effortlessly. He has been my first friend in the music industry and has been a huge inspiration and mentor. Now it's game time, and my music has been doing well!

What do you like most about playing music?

Creating: The entire process and the emotions that turn into art is so fun. I get to turn my frustration, sadness, and motivation into something for others to enjoy and connect with. I know people feel me when they listen to my music.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Truth. Sexy. Fun.

By truth, I mean my truth. I like to create a feeling and vibe that is raw and authentic from what I'm feeling. Energy is everything; I want people to feel things: a little piece of my emotions, sensual energy, and my "corazoncito". It has a Latin flavor to spice it up a lil’ bit!

Why do you think it's important to be out and proud in the music industry?

It's important to be proud no matter what. People don't realize how much your life can change when you follow that inner part of you that's begging to come out. Now is the time to completely let go of all old limited conditioning and be your true self.

As an LGBTQ+ artist, what do you want to convey with your music?

As an artist, I want to express realness, confidence, motivation, a feeling of togetherness and connection, heal, grow, get intimate, dance, and vibe.

My main message to convey is you can do whatever you want. Just tap into you.

Buddy, thank you for sharing your music with us. We are so excited to see where this journey takes you.
