On this edition of our .gay Music Monday Feature, we are honored to interview Clyde Petersen, the creative force behind the indie rock band Your Heart Breaks, hailing from the vibrant city of Seattle, Washington.
Known for their heartfelt lyrics, Your Heart Breaks is a band that speaks to the hearts of many. Petersen, a queer artist and musician, has never felt the need to hide who they are and stands as a beacon of hope for individuals who may feel like they need to conform to societal norms.
In the interview below, we delve into Petersen's creative process and the importance of representation in the music industry.
What inspired you to start playing and making music?
I grew up in Seattle during an all-ages show boom and spend my time attending shows as often as possible. Most of my show-going friends played music. I played percussion in the high school orchestra and spent most of my time at home playing guitar. I was possessed by a guitar. I didn’t have the confidence that my friends in bands had, but I eventually started to write my own songs, and in college, I made my first album on a 4-track and started to play live. I didn’t know how to use the 4-track very well, so all of the audio on the album only plays through the left speaker.
What do you like most about playing music?
My favorite part of playing music is recording. The possibilities, the textures, the mystery. I like being in the studio with the band. I like the moment where you all hold your breath after the last note of the take. Then the pause, then the engineer in the headphones telling if it’s a keeper or if we should try again. Trying your best in the studio can be so many things. Trying your best to make wild feedback. Trying to play the perfect Tambourine part. Every little part adds up to a full song. It’s very satisfying.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Indie-pop adventure stories rooted in non-fiction.
Why do you think it’s important to be out and proud in the music industry?
I don’t feel like I’ve ever had the option to not be out. I just look so gay, and I have my whole life. It’s boring to fade into a crowd. I think it’s important to be yourself no matter what, in music and in life.
As an LGBTQIA+ artist, what do you want to convey with your music?
I like to ask questions about why things are the way they are. How did we get here? Where could we go? What kind of world and communities and possibilities could exist if we lifted these restrictions that we all place on each other? I try to offer reflections on history, paired with dreaming of the future, in my songs.
