Not All Superheroes Wear Capes: Celebrating the Everyday LGBTQIA+ Leaders Among Us

When you hear the word “superhero,” you might think of capes, cosmic powers, or blockbuster movie franchises. But some of the most powerful heroes aren’t on the big screen. They’re in our neighborhoods, our newsfeeds, and our community centers. They’re the artists, the entrepreneurs, the advocates, and the friends who show up, speak out, and inspire action.

The LGBTQIA+ community is full of everyday legends. People who create safe spaces where none existed before. People who lift others up with joy, creativity, and courage. People who choose visibility, even when it’s hard. These are the heroes we want to celebrate.

This Pride Month, .gay is celebrating the everyday Superheroes: honoring those bold, beautiful acts of everyday heroism, big and small.

Not All Superheroes Wear Capes

Superpowers don’t always look the way you expect them to. In this community, superpowers are the ability to stay soft in a world that wants you to harden. The decision to show up again and again, even when the odds feel stacked against you. The courage to be joyful, to be creative, to be visible.

Here are just a few of the powers we celebrate:

  • Visibility
Living out loud can change lives. It challenges assumptions, inspires others, and opens doors. Whether you’re out online, in person, or just beginning that journey, choosing to be seen is one of the most powerful things you can do.

  • Creativity
From drag artistry to digital design, creativity is a radical act. It builds culture. It pushes boundaries. It tells stories that deserve to be heard. When LGBTQIA+ people share their work with the world, it makes the world richer.

  • Joy
In the face of adversity, joy is resistance. It’s also connection, healing, and hope. Queer joy is an act we honor and uplift.

  • Resilience
The strength to keep going, to try again, to stay hopeful (that’s a superpower, too). It’s in the community organizers, the small business owners, the educators, and the quiet champions behind the scenes.

Claim Your Cape

This Pride Month, .gay invites people everywhere to recognize the superheroes in their lives . . . and within themselves. Whether you're launching a business, sharing your story, creating art, or building community, your work matters. It makes a difference. It deserves to be seen.

Choosing a domain that proudly aligns with LGBTQIA+ identity can be a powerful part of that visibility. And when you register a .gay domain, you’re doing more than expressing pride; you’re giving back.

20% of all new registration revenue from .gay domains is donated to organizations CenterLink and GLAAD, two nonprofits doing critical work to support LGBTQIA+ communities around the world. To date, .gay has donated over $210,000 to these organizations since our inception in 2020.

That means every site, every story, every project helps fund real change.

Celebrate the Superheroes Around You

This campaign isn’t just about personal pride, it’s a call to spotlight the superheroes around us. Maybe it’s a local bar that’s been a lifeline for queer youth. Maybe it’s a trans artist breaking boundaries with their work. Maybe it’s a friend who made you feel safe to be yourself.

Whoever your superheroes are, now’s the time to celebrate them.

Picture a classroom, field, or studio where every young person can fully show up as themselves. Where the energy once spent hiding, pretending, and navigating unwelcoming spaces is redirected toward learning, growing, and thriving. This isn't just a dream; it's entirely possible when the adults in young people's lives step forward with informed compassion and concrete action.

When we talk about LGBTQIA+ inclusion, disability often gets left out. And when we talk about disability, Queerness is too often erased. But Queer disabled people exist, and always have. We love, resist, create, and thrive at the intersection of identities that society frequently tries to overlook or simplify.
